Kalpitiya is located in Puttalam district, North Western province of Sri Lanka. It is known for its serene beauty. It consists of 14 islands. It has a total area of 16.73 km2. The people of Kalpitiya are mostly fishermen. It is now developing as an attractive tourist destination.
Kalpitiya has an Old Dutch Fort (1667), built on an older Catholic shrine. It guarded the strategic entrance to the large lagoon. The Dutch attempted to control King Rajasingha’s trade with India. Maps drawn during the Dutch period gave it the name “Calpentyn”.
The Kalpitiya peninsula is one of the most beautiful and least developed coastal stretches in Sri Lanka. This narrow strip of land is separated from the mainland by the Puttalam Lagoon on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other and is home to natural habitats of diverse fauna and flora.
Kalpitiya is also famous as the first region in Sri Lanka to commence Dolphin & Whale watching, and to date can boast the highest dolphin sighting ratio of around 93%, and some of the largest schools of dolphins around the shores of Sri Lanka.
Furthermore Kalpitiya has gained a reputation worldwide as one of the hottest Kite Surfing destination, the consistent strong wind and surf conditions makes it a heaven for avid Kite Surfers from all over the world who flock to this region primarily during the months of May – August each year, turning the skies off the coast of Kalpitiya into a kaleidoscope of colour dancing over the Indian Ocean.
Kalpitiya is home to the Bar Reef, considered one of the best reefs in whole of Asia, offers a breathtaking display of the aquatic wonders of nature in all its vivid variety, not only to look at but also to experience close up as the sea conditions during November to April each year are absolutely perfect for swimming & snorkeling.
The best time for dolphin watching in Kalpitiya is from November to March/April. During this time, conditions are perfect to view a variety of sea mammals: the monsoon season is over and the seas are relatively calm. During this dolphin watching season in Sri Lanka, it is relatively safer for boat rides out in the ocean, since the sea is not as choppy as it is during monsoon months. In addition, since the sea is calm, it is easier to spot dolphins and see them from greater distances. You will see pods of 1000 dolphins and Spinner Dolphins are the most common with Bottlenose, Risso and Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins are seeing regularly. Also Sperm Whales are the most common. The Blue Whale (largest mammal in the world), Minke, Melon-Headed and Dwarf Sperm whales are also spotted. Recently even Orcas have been spotted.
Kalpitiya is one of the top destinations in Sri Lanka for dolphin and whale watching – you can witness hundreds of dolphins in their natural habitat in close proximity to the coast. Also Kalpitiya, a nature hot spot and fascinating historic Dutch maritime town is now branding itself popular for its presence of Sperm Whales and the occasional Blue Whale which alone is a world class attraction of marine life.
The season to view these majestic creatures at Kalpitiya peninsula is between December to mid-April, after the south-west monsoon had spent its energy, the peak months being March and April. If the conditions are right, then during these months, spotting up to a group of 50 sperm whales makes a nature lover’s dream a reality.
Kalpitiya is home to a variety of dolphins, the most common of which is the Spinner dolphin. These delightful dolphins are renowned for their acrobatic displays and are often seen in groups of multiple pods swimming along with the boats. Sometimes, even 300 can be seen at one time! Other dolphins that can be spotted are Bottlenose, Risso and the Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphin
Bar Reef, off the coast of the Kalpitiya peninsula is the largest coral reef in Sri Lanka. The warm, resource-rich water of the Indian Ocean provides the reef and its inhabitants the perfect environment in which to thrive. The Bar Reef is one of the few pristine coral reefs that have the greatest biodiversity of any coral reef in the waters that surround Sri Lanka. It is a complex system of reefs that stretch parallel along the coast from the north end of the Kalpitiya peninsula all the way to the islands that separate Portugal Bay from the Gulf of Mannar. It has a high ecological, biological and aesthetic significance and is home to 156 species of coral and 283 species of fish. The Bar Reef is a large patch reef and around 1 hour away by boat. The waters are crystal clear and depth is from 2 to 8 meters while further out it can increase up to 40m.
Kalpitiya is Located 150 kilometers north of the capital Colombo, (or a 2 hour drive from Sri Lanka’s international airport in Negombo), the Kalpitiya lagoon area is one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the west of Sri Lanka. It is a marine sanctuary with a diversity of habitats, ranging from coral reefs, flat coastal plains, saltpans, mangrove forests and vast sand dune beaches.
This spectacular region to the north of Colombo is a magical destination largely untouched by tourism. Highlighted by wildlife-filled wetlands, a sweeping stretch of largely undeveloped coastline, a friendly, multi-cultural people and stunning rural landscapes punctuated by huge boulders, lotus-topped lakes and jungle, it is historic, wild and raw.
The 14 islands of Battalangunduwa, Palliyawatta, Vellai I, Vellai II, Vellai III, Uchchamunai, Ippantivu, Periya Arichchalai, Sinna Arichchalai, Eramutivu, Sinna Eramutivu, Eramutivu West, Kakativu and Mutwal (Dutch Bay) together make up 1673 hectares of land.
Kalpitiya peninsula -48 km long and 6-8 km wide- is studded with fine sandy beaches.
Stretching from Negombo, a popular beach resort that’s close to the airport, the coastline continues all the way north via Waikkal and Marawila past lagoons and wetlands to the elbow-like peninsular of palm-fringed Kalpitiya and the stunning, recently-opened Wilpattu National Park, home to elephants, bears and leopards.
The beaches along the coastal stretch north of Negombo are beautifully unspoilt; the sea off Kalpitiya is famed for its dolphins and whales (between November and April) and is also a popular spot for kite surfers as well as anyone looking to escape the crowds. Each town along this coastal stretch – Chilaw, Puttalam, Kalpitiya – are important trading centers and are still home to remnants of the island’s colonial past – Dutch forts, Portuguese churches and British administrative buildings.
Inland the scene is very rural with the numerous coconut plantations of the golden triangle north of Gampaha soon giving way to small-scale farmlands that stretch between huge boulders and pretty lakes as the climate gets drier and the people much less used to visitors. Fascinating archaeological sites at Kurunegala, Tonigala, Yapahuwa, Dambadeniya and Panduwasnuwara are also located in the North West of the country and are beautiful, if seldom-visited illustrations of the island’s rich historical past.
The orphanage was established to feed, nurse and house young elephants found abandoned by their mothers. Young elephants sometimes fall into pits and ravines in their quest for water during drought period. Other orphans have been displaced from their wild habitat by development projects or have been found abandoned before weaning, diseased or wounded.
